New statistics issued today by the U.S. Census Bureau suggest the number of people living in poverty in the state of New Jersey is up by around 33,000, roughly equivalent to the population of Long Branch.

Legal Services of New Jersey says the report shows the poverty rate in New Jersey jumped from an average of 9% in 2007/2008 to 9.3% in 2008/09, bringing that segment of the population to 797,000. That's more people than live in any county in the state except for Bergen.

Child poverty in New Jersey rose from 12.2% to 13.3%, while the percentage of state residents without health insurance was level at 14.9%. More localized data will be released Sept. 28th.

The national poverty rate rose to 14.3% from 13.2% and includes 43.6 million people, a rise of 3.8 million, the Census Bureau says. The number of people without health insurance rose by 4.4 million to 50.7 million, up from 15.4% in 2008 to 16.7%.
